Harry Houdini "... The world's most famous magician, Harry Houdini was born as Ehrich Weisz in Budapest, Hungary on March 24, 1874. His father, Mayer Samuel Weisz, was a religious scholar and teacher, who moved his family to Appleton, Wisconsin when Houdini was two years old. Times were difficult for the Weisz family, and they were required to move many times to avoid the bill collectors. Because of the family's financial situation, all of the children began to work at an early age. When Houdini was eight years old, he sold newspapers and worked as a bootblack. However after his father took him to see Dr. Lynn, a traveling magician, Houdini's interest in performing soon consumed him. At the age of 12, Houdini ran away from home and ended up in Kansas City. He was gone for approximately one year, but then rejoined his family in their new home in New York City. CLICK HERE for the rest of the story.

PBS's film "The American Experience" on Houdini "... In 1912 Harry Houdini was lowered into New York's East River in a crate wrapped in chains. The crowd of spectators gasped; reporters pulled out their stop watches. Houdini was out in less than a minute. The resulting media blitz established him forever as the world's greatest escape artist. On stage, Houdini subjected himself to the Water Torture Cell, being buried alive, and other perils of his own design...." Includes gallery of Houdini posters, a timeline, and more.

What is the World's
Most Lethal Magic Trick?

Deaths associated with the Bullet Catch "... The effect known as the Bullet Catch has claimed the lives of at least 15 magicians who were killed in connection with this potentially lethal trick. In the effect, a bullet is fired directly at the performer, and he (or she) catches the bullet in the teeth, hopefully without any ill effects. There are a number of ways to perform this trick, and those that perform it as a stunt invite disaster. Sometimes things go wrong- equipment fails or worse. The most famous bullet-catching death was that of Chung Ling Soo (William Robinson), shot on stage in 1918. Rumors persisted that his death was not an accident caused by equipment malfunction, but was a murder motivated by jealousy...."
